Summer lovin'

Wednesday, May 25, 2011

Shhh, don't tell him.

Been really enjoying the time off and how my weeks generally consist of rest first 4 days and work 3 days. Really get to enjoy catching up with friends and family. As well, I kicked off my chain of concert series last week with the IAMDONALD tour (Troy from Community for those who are unfamiliar) at the Opera House. Definitely one of the best twenty dollars I've spent invested (thanks @dmai21). He was funny and amazingly talented. The crowd was awesome and basically knew every words to his album Culdesac and his new EP. I can't wait till more of his stuff comes out. My next concert will be Rihanna followed by NKOTBSB. I am super stoked cause I'll be going to both with the best friend and in between making a pit stop in NYC. Hoping to do more sightseeing and less shopping (but who am I kidding right?!). I guess we'll just have to see how much I can save up before that.

On another note, here's some random bits I'm in love with.

Donald Glover a.k.a Childish Gambino - Smart, sexy, talented and funny.

Baby girl you know what I want, let me do it to ya, do it to ya...

Currently avoiding to read all the novels that are piling up from French (I mean, really, I can't help it if I fall asleep every two lines...). Anyways, decied to browse Fashionising instead and looked through the spring trends to see if I can find some inspiration. I am in dire need of some spicing up. Nothing particular jumped (same old trends under different categories) but I was really digging a lot of the Topshop stuff (which btw is coming to Toronto!). Also falling in love with maxi skirts more and more but afraid it might make me look stumpy and short. I am also MADLY in love with Chloe's SS11 collection because it combines all of my favourite things: nude/cream colours, sheer textures and amazing flow. Now onto finding a rich husband to satisfy my love.

This Not That

As part of an assignment for my painting class, we were asked to go see one of the films that were shown at the 8th Annual Reel Artists Festival at the TIFF Bell Lightbox. Initially, my choice for the film was solely based on timing. Given the crappy weather on Saturday, I had missed the film discussing China as growing empire for contemporary art. Instead, I was able to attend the Canadian premiere of This Not That: The Artist John Baldessari. I am immensely satisfied after this documentary. Everything about him; whether it was his technique or his philosophy were really interesting. I was glad that this assignment pushed me to get out there. I am definitely planning on attending more of these next year. I was somewhat disappointed I had missed the one about Ai Wei Wei and Wanda Koop.

My absolute favourite piece Baldessari piece:

Paper Crown

Came across Lauren Conrad's new line called Paper Crown. Definitely taking on that E and J direction but still keeping to her old stuff. Kinda like it but expecting the price point to be somewhere ridiculous. Nonethless, enjoy!

And I could hear the thunder and see the lightning crack

I've basically eaten my way through last week from the multiple Chinese New Year feast (pictures to follow) to Winterlicious at Jump. I can't even step on the scale cause god knows what kind of horrid number it will give me. Nonetheless, I was surrounded by family and friends which always lighten things up. Jump was delicious but as expected, extremely small portions (or at least for my girls that ordered the beef rib). We were disappointed when we traveled all the way to Moroco Chocolat only to find it close :(. I guess there's always another day. Headed to Panorama instead for drinks and girl time. Overall a good weekend.

It's insane that reading week is rolling around (in two weeks) which means I'll have a ton of work to do before I get to relax. Somehow when I say that, I still find time to do useless things. In fact, as I'm waiting for my painting to dry, I just attempted at making this DIY Bokeh lens following the tutorial at DIY Photography. I'll let the visuals show you the result.

Rumour has it...

While I love the fact that school cancelled all its classes today, I don't understand by what standard they make that call. I had to drive my mom this morning and it really wasn't that bad (I think it was worse 3 weeks ago!). The Star posted an article about the Toronto School Board closing its school since 1999 or something. Usually, school would be open and buses just won't run but today, schools were closed. I do feel it is a little ridiculous, I mean we live in Canada, do we really not expect this kind of insanity? Provinces and cities like Winnipeg and Manitoba have seen worse. Heck, even London has seen worse and I didn't see this kind of attention.

We Torontonians are such pansies (me included)!

I'm not calling you a liar, just don't lie to me.

Adele - Set Fire to The Rain

Florence and The Machine - I'm Not Calling You A Liar

Updated my iPod playlist and currently in love with both Adele and Florence and The Machine. There is something about their music that just reminds of those warm Sundays were you just linger around and enjoy doing nothing.

Skinny versus curvy

It's been a lazy 3 weeks and I'll be heading back to school Monday for my last semester of my undergraduate year (YES I did do a victory lap but who's counting right?). Before I take on all my courses in full force, I'd like to take the time to blog about last night's (at some point) trending topic on Twitter. There was this Mr.KennethTong that was making is round promoting what some sort of anorexia and basically tweeting about how every girl should strive to be a size zero, regardless of the ways they get there. Of course, this stirred up a lot of controversy and lots of people, such as Rihanna and Katy Perry tweeted back, advocating how girls should love their body and not strive for that crap. I definitely agree with the fact that this guy is a d-bag and should really shut up because anorexia and bulimia are not issues that should be thrown around like that.

However, while stars like Rihanna and Katy Perry are encouraging girls to love the way they are, ultimately it still comes down to this socially and culturally constructed idea of what the "ideal body shape is" which is to be either thin or curvy. Just like girls use extreme methods to reach a size zero, girls who strive to be curvy also succumb to extreme measures (buttocks implant, breast augmentation, etc). It's always easy for stars who are either skinny or curvy (in all the right places) to tell girls to love who they are and appreciate their own "body shape". But could you imagine if these stars didn't look the way they did? I mean it's easy for them to say cause they look like they do. Ultimately, they do whatever it takes to maintain that figure (and often we just don't know).  The reality is, people should strive to be maintain a "healthy" body and do so for the sake of oneself. The most By exercising and accessing healthy food choices, your body shape will represent your hard work. As well, be consciously aware of what the media is really trying to tell you. Keeping a conscious, open mind is important.

What I guess I'm saying is I definitely, strongly disagree with this asshole tweeting about size zero and skinny girls, I also think we should evaluate whether the other side is completely right.  Nonetheless, I still love Rihanna and Katy Perrry and as long as you are happy with yourself, don't change for anyone else!

A New Decade!

It never seize to amaze me how quick time passes by. I honestly feel like I haven't left high school all that long ago. Yesterday as we were heading back from the park to my friend's place, one of my buddies mentioned how we've been out of high school longer than we were actually in high school. I really still don't feel like I'm ready to step into the real world. I mean, am I ready for that 9-5? WILL I even get a job? How will I manage financially? What do I want? and as much as I want to avoid finding answers to questions like these, it won't be long before I WILL have to.

Nonetheless, I'm looking forward to experience what 2011 has to offer and celebrate the beginning of a new decade.

PS>> I will definitely commit to blogging more.
